Tired of Your Asparagus Wilting? This Simple Storage Tip Will Keep It Fresh For Days

Photographer: Jae Payne

I watch a lot of shows on Food Network, and because of my loyalty, I’d like to think that I qualify for an honorary chef certificate. I’m still working on coming up with meals off the top of my head and creating meals from random basket items like on Chopped, but one thing I am a pro at is following recipes.

I try to cook as much as possible to save money and also because I find it to be relaxing. One of my go-to meals is salmon with asparagus and sweet potatoes. Basic? Very. But it’s delicious. Every now and then, I’ve grabbed a bunch of asparagus out of the fridge only to find that it wilted. Tired of wasting my money and food, I found this simple storage hack to be extremely useful.

With the rubber bands still around the asparagus, cut one inch off the bottom. Next, fill up a glass jar (I like to use Weck jars) with one to two inches of water. Place the bunch of asparagus in the jar and store it in the fridge. If you plan on cooking your asparagus in the next few days, this method will work fine. If you don’t plan on cooking it soon, repeat the above steps and place a plastic snack bag over the tops to retain moisture. This method can also be used for storing herbs like cilantro.

Now that you know how to keep your asparagus as fresh as can be (praying you all caught my Outkast reference), here are some asparagus recipes to try:
